Climate Differently Impacts the Growth of Coexisting Trees and Shrubs under Semi-Arid Mediterranean Conditions

چکیده
Background and Objectives—Coexisting tree shrub species will have to withstand more arid conditions as temperatures keep rising in the Mediterranean Basin. However, we still lack reliable assessments on how climate drought affect radial growth of at intra- interannual time scales under semi-arid conditions. Materials Methods—We investigated responses four co-occurring gymnosperms inhabiting sites northeastern Spain: two (Aleppo pine, Pinus halepensis Mill.; Spanish juniper, Juniperus thurifera L.) shrubs (Phoenicean phoenicea L.; Ephedra nebrodensis Tineo ex Guss.). First, quantified intra-annual radial-growth rates by periodically sampling wood samples during one growing season. Second, climate–growth relationships an scale with different soil water availability using dendrochronology. Third, simulated temperature moisture forward, process-based Vaganov?Shashkin (VS-Lite) model disentangle main climatic drivers growth. Results—The all peaked spring early summer (May–June). The pine junipers grew after dry summer, i.e., they showed a bimodal pattern. Prior wet winter leading high before cambium reactivation enhanced P. sites, whereas both depended spring–summer moisture. VS-Lite identified these influences species. Conclusions—Our approach (i) revealed contrasting dynamics co-existing (ii) provided novel insights function habits similar drought-prone regions.

Impacts of different tillage practices on some soil microbiological properties and crop yield under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions
Effects of six tillage practices on some soil microbiological properties and crop yields were evaluated for a clay soil (Typic Haploxererts) under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions in a three year study (2006-2009). The experiment was designed as a completely randomized-block with three replications. Treatments were: conventional tillage with residue incorporated (CT1), conventional tillage wi...
متن کاملFodder Trees and Shrubs in Arid and Semi-arid Livestock Production Systems
Arid and semi-arid lands constitute a large proportion of available agricultural and rangeland in the world. These lands are characterised by low and unreliable rainfall, low land productivity, and low socioeconomic status of the inhabitants. Livestock plays a very significant role in their economies. Leguminous trees and shrubs, which dominate the natural rangelands, are often higher in crude ...
متن کاملImpacts of climate change on extreme precipitation events in arid (Bandar Abbas) and semi-arid (Shahrekord) stations in Iran
The aim of this paper is to project extreme precipitation events in an arid and a semiarid station. In order to project climate change based on general circulation models (GCMs), we have applied LARS-WG[1] downscaling tool. This stochastic weather generator down-scaled the climate of two synoptic stations using HADCM3 model and A2 emission scenario for 2040. We extracted extreme precipitation e...

1 Introduction Accurate quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) is one of the most important elements in meteorological and hydrologic analyses. It has been long recognized, however, that rain gauge networks are usually inadequate because of their limited distribution. During the last decades intense scientific efforts have been devoted to utilize remote sensing information for the estimati...
متن کاملInvestigation of Sedimentation of Small Catchments under Precipitation Pattern and Basin Characteristics in Arid and Semi-Arid Climate
Splash (raindrop) erosion plays an significant role in soil loss, especially in arid and semi-arid regions with poor vegetation. In this paper, by analyzing the pattern of rainfalls that occurred during 26 years in four basins located in Semnan County, their effect on the pattern of eroded sediments from the basin was investigated. Sedimentary layers from the sampling of retarding reservoir sed...
